Ange Postecoglou could start £19m Tottenham player for the first time this season vs Aston Villa
Ange Postecoglou will surely hand Rodrigo Bentancur his first start of the season against Aston Villa today.
Spurs are short of options in defense and midfield due to injuries and bans.
Indeed, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison will be sidelined till the new year.
Yves Bissouma will also miss the game due to suspension, and Cristian Romero is still suspended following his red card against Chelsea.
Postecoglou is concerned about Pape Matar Sarr’s fitness after the Senegal international did not exercise on Friday.
It leaves the Australian manager low on midfield options, and he has been hesitant to start Rodrigo Bentancur up to this time.
After sustaining an ACL injury in February, the Uruguayan returned to action last month. During the international break, Bentancur began for Uruguay and gained significant playing time.
And, in our opinion, now is the proper time for Bentancur to return to the starting XI against Villa.
Bentancur will almost certainly start against Villa.
Bentancur has made three substitute appearances since returning to action last month.
Last season, the 26-year-old was a crucial player for Spurs before suffering a season-ending injury.
Due to his proficiency on the ball and his tireless work-rate, the £19 million man appears to be a strong fit for Postecoglou’s approach.
Spurs may need to rely on Bentancur’s talent with the ball at his feet against Villa with Maddison out and Bissouma suspended.
Postecoglou could potentially go with Giovani Lo Celso, who impressed in a 15-minute cameo against Wolves last time out. With Sarr’s fitness in doubt, Bentancur will almost certainly earn a start in North London today.
You can see why Postecoglou was hesitant to bring Bentancur back after such a devastating injury. Nonetheless, the midfielder appears to be nearing full fitness and will be boosted after appearing for Uruguay over the international break.
