Newcastle produced a spectacular second-half performance to end Chelsea’s Premier League momentum with a 4-1 victory at St James’ Park.

Raheem Sterling had the chance to cancel out Alexander Isak’s opener with a brilliant free-kick after Jamaal Lascelles’ first-half blunder, but the Newcastle captain gave his team the lead with a bullet header on the hour.

Joelinton then capitalized on Thiago Silva’s gaffe on the day he became the Blues’ oldest outfielder in history, at 39 years and 64 days.

Anthony Gordon’s magnificent solo effort seven minutes from time sealed a resounding win, the perfect response to the Magpies’ 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth before the international break.

The fact that it was accomplished without 13 senior players – Joe Willock and Emil Krafth were added to the injury list on the eve of the game – will have given head coach Eddie Howe great delight.

The vast majority of the 52,227-person crowd went smiling, but wondering what team Howe will be able to pitch against Paris St. Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday evening

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino watched as a good first half devolved into pandemonium as full-back Reece James was sent out late on for two bookable offences.
