United out of Champions League, Union Berlin left empty-handed
Manchester United have been eliminated from the Champions League and will not compete in the Europa League following a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, while Union Berlin have also been eliminated.
As Group A leaders, the German record champions advanced to the round of 16 and extended their unbeaten run in the group stage to 40 games. Copenhagen advanced to the knockout phase with a 1-0 victory over Galatasaray, who qualified for the Europa League, while United finished bottom of the group.
Meanwhile, Union Berlin finished their first Champions League season without a win after falling to Real Madrid 3-2. As a result, Union will also miss out on the Europa League and will instead concentrate on the Bundesliga.
Madrid had already qualified for the final 16 as Group C champions, and they were joined by Napoli, who advanced after defeating Braga 2-0. Despite the setback, the Portuguese club advanced to the Europa League.
Benfica also qualified for the second-tier European competition after a 3-1 overtime win over Red Bull Salzburg.
